Kelloggsville Community Garden Planting

DATE June 3, 2013LEAVE A COMMENT

On Friday, May 31, third graders from Kelloggsville’s West Elementary School  planted 12 of the raised beds and the vine pumpkin, gourd, zucchini patch in the community garden.  Under the direction of Teacher Lynnea Roon and Teacher/Community Garden Coordinator Mike Zurgable, the students took plants they had grown from seeds in their classrooms, and planted them in the garden that will benefit the community!

High school students from the National Honors Society were on hand to help as well.

Every 30 minutes throughout the afternoon, a new bus of students arrived.  They were given background information on the garden and how it serves the community, the plants they have been growing in their classrooms, and planting instructions.   From there students were able to get their hands dirty with a variety of jobs from planting to watering, to moving and spreading mulch.  What a great example of  “hands-on” learning!
